The education system, the mirror of the society

Education is the mold in which "raw material" sits for a long enough period of time for it to take the shape that corresponds the school’s curriculum.
In ancient Greece, there were two types of schools, one that produced working citizens, trained in math, philosophy, rhetoric and sports, while the other produced soldiers.
Owing to the belicose atmosphere that reigned at that time, the education system adapted itself to that environment of strife and conflicts, and focused more on “making” more warriors.
The other subjects took a back seat especially in places like Sparta where a high premium was put on defending the city.
The themes that were not taught in the schools were delegated to the parents, like for example basic hygiene, respect for elders, ...
State education was established because governments didn't somehow trust the parents with the task of providing the necessary education and discipline to their kids, so that they could grow into productive citizens that would benefit the state and be aligned with its goals.
Thus, notion such as respect for the authority, fixed schedules and a system of reward and punishment made their way into the education system, tasks that were the prerogative of perents before.
By examining the education system, the school environment, and the subjects taught, we could easily intuit what a society values the most.
It could be foreign languages, science, art, discipline, or any subject that is deemed important at that time.
