Social media, communication platforms and our social life

The intensive use of social media, dating sites, and electronic communication platforms made social misfits out of most of us.
The implications are far reaching, and could be noticed within companies, in hospitality jobs, or in any type of activity that requires social savviness.
We see the emergence of new types of jobs, especially those requiring high levels of interpersonal skills.
The main goal of these new positions is to re-train the staff in abilities that should have been acquired during childhood, abilities that are essential to be able to function within a family, a tribe, a community or a full-fledged society.
The sheer lack of these skills alienates people form their immediate environment, making it less likely for them to navigate the intricate labyrinth a the nuclear family, or work cohesively within a team to produce good results.
The scary, yet common sight of families or friends gathered around a restaurant table, obliviously eating their food while buried in their phones, is also a stark example of the effects the insidious isolating effect these devices have on us.
They atrophy our communal abilities and make it hard for us to interact, and socialize in a meaningful way.
There is a balance that has to be maintained.
There are times when we can prepare a dish from scratch, and times when we can use the convenience of a ready-made dish, times when we can wander around relying on our instincts, and times when we can use a navigation system to find our way, times when we can to go through the grinding, yet gratifying process of a cold approach, and times when we can use the frictionless process of a dating platform, times where we interact with our fellow humans, and times where we can retract and be on our own with our devices.
